The Quiet After the Bark: Navigating the Unique Grief of Pet Loss

For many of us, our pets aren't just companions—they are the silent witnesses to our lives, the steady rhythm in our daily routines, and a unique source of comfort that humans often can't replicate. Recently, I’ve been navigating this firsthand following the loss of my dog, Thor.

Pet loss carries a specific kind of "disenfranchised grief." Because society doesn't always afford it the same weight as the loss of a human family member, we may feel pressured to "get over it" quickly. But the bond we share with our animals is profound. They see us at our most vulnerable and love us without judgment. When that presence is gone, the silence in the house can feel heavy.

If you are currently walking through a season of loss—whether it’s a furry friend or a different life transition—please remember:

  • Your grief is valid. There is no "right" way to feel.

  • Routine is a double-edged sword. It’s okay if the usual walk or feeding time feels painful right now.

  • Be gentle with your capacity. Grief is exhausting work.

Healing doesn't mean forgetting; it means carrying their memory with a little more peace each day. To Thor, and to all the companions who have left paw prints on our hearts: thank you for the lessons in love.
